This Month's Grooming & Fashion Tips:

Ties & Accessories

  • Ties - Match your tie to one accent color in your shirt or jacket. If you want a tie to match your new blue suit, take a swatch along so you can shop accurately. Make sure the pattern of the tie is compatible with the suit, no competing stripes or polka dots. The standard width of 3.75 inches is a classic, always in style. Have your ties professionally cleaned. Go easy on tie tacks and tie bars; they are fading from popularity.
  • Socks - Buy over-the-calf socks in dark colors for your business suits. There's nothing worse than seeing a guy cross or uncross his legs and getting a glimpse of exposed leg. Match sock colors to your shoe color or suit color.
  • Belts - Simple, classic leather belts are best for business dress. Go for full-grain; it's more expensive but it lasts longer. Avoid the exotic skins (alligator, crocodile, lizard, snake) with your everyday suits. Save them for special occasions. Avoid big buckles; the buckle of your belt should not draw attention. The right length fits well when the end reaches the first loop, but not the second. The color of your shoes and belt should match. Also match the metals of belt buckle with watch, tie clip, cuff links or any other accessories you wear that day.
  • Cuff Links - They lend an air of elegance to your look. Save them for special business and formal occasions. Keep your cuff links simple, and not too flashy.
